The Long County girl’s basketball team lost one and won one this past weekend.
On Friday, the girls traveled to Brunswick to take on the Pirates, and lost a close game 44-49.  In the game, the Blue Tide had to face the Brunswick ladies without their leading scorer, Gentara Holmes, who had twisted her ankle the day before in practice.
The Pirates dominated the first two periods, and had a 16-point lead at the break.  But in the third quarter, coach Julie Daffron made some adjustments, putting in several of her JV players.  With the changes the Lady Tide was able to tie the game up.  The final period went back and fourth, but in the end; the Pirates chalked up the victory.
“I was pleased with the entire teams effort, but I was especially happy with India (Gamble) and Brianne’s (Page) play on both offense and defense,” Daffron said.
In the game Shareka Turner and Page had 8 points each, and the leading shooter was freshman Gamble with 12 points.
On Saturday, the girls traveled to Baxley to take on the Appling County Pirates, but this time they were able to sink their opponent’s ship, and won the game 43-24.
The Lady Tide dominated the game from the tip off, leading 8-4 at the end of the first quarter, and 20-10 at half time. In the third period the Long County girls scored 10 to the Pirates 5, and in the final period they out scored their opponents 13 to 9, to get an easy region win.
Daffron said, “Gamble started this game and she really played well on offense and defense.  I also though Caela LaRochester played very aggressive on defense.”
In the game LaRochester had 8 points, an ailing Gentara Holmes had 9 points, and the leading scorer for the night again was Gamble with 18 big points.
The Long County girls now have an overall regular season record of 10-10, and a 2-AA Region record of 7-6.
The Lady Tide played their final game Tuesday night against the Brantley County Herons in Ludowici.  The girl’s 2-AA Region Tournament begins next week in Darien.
