The Bradwell Tigers boys and girls basketball teams ended 2016 by competing in the Metter Holiday Classic when they faced Toombs County Bulldogs on Wednesday and the host Metter Tigers on Thursday.

The girls finally got another win on the board in their tournament opener defeating the Bulldogs 58-39. It was their first win since defeating South Effingham before Thanksgiving break.

The Tigers had a more trouble when they faced Toombs County in their first game. The Bulldogs, ranked no. 15 in AA according to MaxPreps, held off the Tigers in a thrilling 79-76 victory.

In the game, the Tigers were led by Darryll Johnson, who recorded 19 points, and JaVonte LeCounte, who had 12.

The Tigers bounced back in Thursday’s game against Metter with a 58-52 victory over the host team. This win snapped a three-game losing streak for Bradwell and brought the overall record to 6-5.

In the game, LeCounte led the team with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Johnson scored 12 points. Justin James had 15 rebounds and eight blocks on the night.

The Tigers are looking to use this win over one of the better teams in AA as momentum as they head into the meat of their region schedule over the coming weeks.

Head coach Will Douberly talked about the importance of the play his team got over the Christmas break.

"We play in an extremely competitive region and the upcoming region games will be a great measuring stick for where we are in our team’s development," he said. "We are still learning what it means to consistently give a championship effort, and when we do the right things, we have success. We will have to give a championship effort against these talented region teams."

The Tigers both return to action in the new year when they travel to face off against the Effingham County Rebels on Tuesday in a key Region 2-AAAAAA match-up.
