The Lady Tigers taught a physics lesson to the Johnson Atom Smashers Friday night, taking a 26-point victory and adding yet another win to their region record.
The Lady Tigers are 11-4 overall and 5-1 in 3-AAAAA as they enter the heart of their season.
Despite the 26-point lead head coach Faye Baker and assistant coach Dana King both said this was one of the hardest game they've had.
"We started out really flat the first half and we struggled with the free throws," Baker said. "I thought they gave us a very good fight and I have a lot of respect for their program."
Baker said she was again impressed with Mariah Maternik's control of the ball, adding she was happy to also start Correnda Duvernay, who was previously ineligible.
"We made some adjustments and we went to a zone defense and I think it was effective and allowed us to extend our lead in the third quarter," Baker said. "As far as Mariah she just does the things that you do not teach. She is a true, pure point guard and makes a big difference on our team."
Second year Lady Atom Smasher head coach Kim Bynum said it was the best first half of basketball her team played all season. With a relatively young squad and a rebuilding period this season she was proud her team kept up with the Lady Tigers closing the half with a 23-23 tie.
"We had 23 point the first half, three in the third quarter and a total of nine in the entire second half due to coach Baker switching to a zone defense," she said. "That required us to shoot the ball and took away the dribble penetration from us. It forced us to shoot the ball and we didn't shoot very well. She shut us down defensively in the second half."
The Lady Tigers were scheduled to travel to Tattnall County for a non-region tip-off at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
