The Liberty County Lady Panthers soccer team won its Feb. 7 scrimmage against Vidalia 6-2 and tied with Brunswick, 2-2, for the season opener. Both games were played on the girls’ home field at Lewis Frasier Middle School.

Lady Panther coach Jarvis McArthur said he has a young squad with 26 girls dressing out for the squad, 11 of whom are freshmen.

McArthur said three of the goals in the scrimmage against Vidalia came from freshman Mystery Ellert. Last season, Ellert was a standout player for the First Presbyterian Christian Academy Lady Highlanders.

"The other goals were scored by Jeanna Rountree, Diana Jimenez and Aubrey Stevenson," McArthur said.

"Brunswick was a hard fought game. Ellert scored early and we led 1-0 at halftime. Freshman Brittany Sumner headed in another goal late in the second half to give us a 2-1 lead. But Brunswick added another goal later for the 2-2 tie."

The coach said Rountree has been great at midfield, easily moving the ball up the field to the forwards.

The Lady Panthers were scheduled to go to Brantley County yesterday and will be traveling to Fitzgerald tomorrow.

The Courier will bring you the scores and highlights as they become available.
