The Liberty County Mite soccer team won the District 2 championship Nov. 19 in Wayne County.
The local Junior All-Star team also played in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association, District tournament, but didn’t fare as well.
The Mite squad was led by Tristan Ximello-Casillas, who scored all five goals, in a 5-3 win over Wayne County. The Junior team also played Wayne County, losing 4-2.
The Mites advance to the GRPA State tournament in Dalton on this Friday and Saturday.
The GRPA District 2 competition began Nov. 16, with the Liberty Mite and Midget teams playing first round games against Camden County. The Mites won 10-1 and the Midgets won 5-3, advancing to the second round.
Liberty’s Senior squad was defeated by Wayne County 6-2 in the first game of a best of three. All teams returned to action the next night. The Mites defeated Glynn County by a score of 10-1.
The Midgets were eliminated in a 3-2 loss to Long County. The Juniors defeated McIntosh County 7-1, and the Seniors lost to Wayne County 6-2.
