The LCRD taekwondo team was poised for a fight and fight they did, bringing home medals in the process.
Four team members went to the 2008 Georgia Games Taekwondo Championship in Kennesaw on April 12, and came home with seven medals.
It was the first competitive match for two sisters, Tayzsa Meeks and Heaven Toussaint and both girls medaled, earning two bronze and two gold medals. Ready to receive their medals at home were their parents who said they were proud of the girls’ achievements.
Armando Toledo had a tough fight, winning the gold medal in forms and the silver in sparring. David Betts said he had a great time during his fight. He won in the second round, 10-3.
Back from the Georgia Games the group trained harder and harder as they got ready for a Statesboro competition this weekend, a national qualifier in Daytona, and the National Junior Olympic in Detroit, MI.
Coach Rafael Medina said his assistant coaches Edmond Conyers, Luis Gaybort and Mychael Conyers, who is new, have brought an enthusiasm that is helping the team.
“I believe we have created something truly special in our community through the positive discipline of taekwondo,” Medina said.
