Liberty YMCA fares well at gymnastics tourney

The Liberty County/Armed Services YMCA Gymnastics team went to its first YMCA Gymnastics National Championship and Festival last weekend and walked away with some medals.

The event kicked off June 29 at the Savannah Civic Center with competitions beginning Friday through Sunday at the Savannah International Trade and Conventions Center.

After the fun and festive opening ceremony Thursday night the gymnasts were ready to show off their skills in front of the judges.

Friday afternoon was the competition for level one gymnasts Delaycia Fleming and Sophia Hool.

Level one medals were given for first and second places.

Fleming earned an all-around score of 34.150 out of 40 points, putting her in sixth place.

Hool earned 35.150 all-around, giving her third place. She received a second place medal for beam.

Saturday afternoon, it was the Xcel Silver gymnasts’ turn. The Liberty gymnasts are Sania Williams, Lyric Wilson, Ayanna Scott, Erica Mock and Maggie Horton.

Medals were given for first through fourth places.

In the Xcel Silver child category Scott earned 34.55 for all-around, including second for vault and second for floor.

Horton, who is recovering from a knee injury, earned 33.7 all-around, fourth on bars and third for beam.

Wilson earned 35.725 all-around and placed fourth on beam. Mock earned an all-around score of 33.850. Johnson earned 35.375 all-around, placed third on vault and fourth on beam.

Williams earned 36.175 all-around and placed first on beam.

Gymnastics Coordinator Sonya Marx said, "They all do amazing and I wanted them to just have fun and that’s exactly what they did. I am beyond proud of every single of them. They blow me away with every meet they go to and this meet they did it again."
