Liberty County High School senior Jasmine Scott won the Region 3-AAA discus championship with a throw of 98-feet, 5-inches last week.
Today, she competes among the best discus hurlers in the state at the Class AAA state track meet in Albany.
Scott is scheduled to throw at 1:30 p.m.
Her personal best is 103, but she has thrown 110 in practice.
Scott knows she must be at her best today, because Thanithis Billings from Carrollton has the top throw at 135-5.
To improve her distance, Scott has been working hard this past week on her technique and form.
“I’ve been working on keeping my arms down and making sure I go straight up and down,” Scott said.
She said she is not nervous but the competition looms heavy in her mind.
“When I go home tonight (Thursday) and sleep, it will be the first thing on my mind,” Scott said. “It will be the first thing on my mind when I wake so I’m going to get focused now and early.”
She has thrown the discus for two years and is under the tutelage of discus pro Steve White, who has taught her how to spin, release and get the discus in the air.
Scott said it feels great to be acknowledged among the best discus throwers in the state.
After graduation, she will attend Albany State University on a ROTC scholarship.
