Basketball leads to bigger dreams

Scott’s All-Stars AAU league basketball team suffered a few losses but learned a valuable lesson about education during their second tournament, held April 16-17 at Jenkins High School in Savannah. The All-Stars were the tournament hosts and competed against seven AAU teams from Savannah, Brunswick and Hinesville.
All-Stars founder Marcus Scott said the monthly tournaments provide a great opportunity for the kids to gain game experience and learn how to make adjustments on the court. But the kids also learned what would happen if they let their academics slip.
“We had seven out of 31 elementary and middle school students who were suspended due to below-expected academic performance on their report card,” Scott said. “Although most were passing all their classes, passing is not good enough for our program. These seven kids’ grades were below an 80 combined average. Because of this, they were suspended for two games, cannot be a starter or captain until grades improve, and the players must raise their GPA to an 80 before going on any road tournaments.”
Scott said the boys were disappointed about not being able to play but understood the reason they were being pulled off the court.
“Some of the players suspended played key roles on their team. These players realized that because of their poor grades, their friends and teammates and team record were affected,” Scott said. “I am confident that all our kids will have the required grades by report card time.  Our current team GPA is an 85. Our goal is to have every child with at least a 90 overall average.”
