Former Liberty County High School basketball player Rion Brown, currently playing for the University of Miami, will play a game close to home during Christmas time.
Brown, a senior guard for the Hurricanes, will be in Savannah on Dec. 19 when the Savannah State University Tigers host Miami at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
According to Savannah State’s website, the game will be the fourth match-up all-time between the teams and the programs’ first meeting since the 2003-04 season. The teams also met in 1989 and 2002. Miami holds a 3-0 lead in the series.
In the 2012-13 season, Brown averaged 6.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in helping the Hurricanes to a 29-7 overall record. In the Athletic Coast Conference tournament championship game, Brown scored  12 points and took down four rebounds as the Hurricanes won the tourney title for the first time in the program’s history.
During the NCAA tournament, the Liberty County native scored 21 points in the second round against Illinois to tie for fourth-best outing by a ’Cane in an NCAA tournament game and lead Miami to a close win.
In three NCAA tournament games, Brown averaged 11.7 points per game and 3.7 rebounds.
