The Hinesville Hurricanes semiprofessional football team will host the Valdosta Tigers at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Youth Services Football Field on Fort Stewart.
The game is the preseason opener, held annually on Fort Stewart to honor the military and their families. This season, the Hurricanes will play in the Elite Football League.
In 2010, the Hinesville Hurricanes earned a championship ring by winning the Southeastern American Football League. The past two seasons, the Hurricanes played in the United Spring Football League, where the Hurricanes were runners-up last year.
League play starts this month and runs for at least 11 weeks before the playoffs. The Hurricanes will host the South Georgia Rattlers on Feb. 22. Their first home game will be dedicated to the late Mary Jo Sharp, the wife of Hurricanes’ head coach James Sharp.
The Hurricanes’ home games will be played at Long Bell Stadium at the Liberty County Recreation Department. Their 2014 schedule currently is tentative.
