The Hinesville Hurricanes claimed a 36-6 win over the Valdosta Tigers on Saturday on Fort Stewart.
The Hurricanes are 2-0. Their first win came by forfeit Feb. 1.
’Canes quarterback Dashawn Lee got the scoring started for the home team by tossing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alvin Abets, who, moments later, converted for two points.
In the second quarter, Hinesville’s defense put some points on the board when linebacker and team captain Jamie Sharp snatched the ball away from a Tiger and ran it back 80 yards for a touchdown.
Valdosta managed to throw a 30-yard touchdown pass, but the Hurricanes stopped the extra-point attempt.
The ’Canes answered when Lee handed the ball to Tracey Lewis for a short run into the end zone followed by another 2-point conversion by Adrian Smith.
The ‘Canes led, 22-6, at halftime.
The Hurricane offense opened the third quarter with a quarterback keeper by Lee for a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, the ’Canes placed Tony Blocker under center, and he tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Lee. Smith came in for another 2-point conversion.
Charles Crossley, Lewis and Smith each had an interception.
Head coach James Sharp said Tim Darden, Chauncey Crossley, Tank Rutherford, Roland Jackson and Gavin Whitfield all made hard hits for the team.
The coach added that the players played outstanding and credited coach Michael “Ice” Jones and quarterback coach Frank Troupe for keeping the players focused and game-ready.
The Hurricanes will host the Jacksonville Black Hawks at 3 p.m. Saturday at Long Bell Stadium. Admission is $5 for adults; children 12-and-younger are admitted free.
Prizes will be given away and refreshments will be sold.
The Hurricanes’ first game at Long Bell will be dedicated to the late Mary Jo Sharp, the wife of the Hurricanes head coach.
