The weather kept interrupting the schedules, but the Liberty County Recreation Department’s all-star junior softball team still competed in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament in Vidalia and finished with a 2-2 record.
Liberty County had a rough start July 10, when it lost to Vidalia, 3-2. Rain forced Liberty’s second game to be postponed until Thursday, when the girls bounced back with a 15-0 win over Carrollton County. Liberty beat Lee County, 9-1, in its next game.
On Friday morning, the girls were set to play Augusta but the skies opened up just before the game, pushing the contest to Saturday morning.
Playing in the rain, Liberty trailed, 11-0, after the first inning and eventually fell, 11-6.
All-Stars coach Michael Smith said despite the loss the girls had a great season and a great run, earning the District Two title. He said the state tournament offered the girls a good learning experience for next season.
