Midway Middle School’s basketball teams swept the Dec. 6-8 middle school tournament at St. James Sports Center.
According to event organizer Ernie Walthour, the Midway Middle School girls fought Lewis Frasier to the bitter end.
“It was a defensive slug fest,” Walthour said. “Lewis Frasier took a shot right at the buzzer to force overtime but it rimmed out.”
Walthour said MMS won,
27-25.
In the boys’ division it came down to Midway Middle School and First Presbyterian Christian Academy. MMS won, 74-55, in the finals.
“It was an eight-point game at half time, but Midway is just so talented. They have Richard LeCounte, who is an exceptional player,” Walthour said.
Walthour added FPCA’s middle-school team has an up-and-coming player in George Mitchell. The organizer said watching kids like LeCounte and Mitchell go against each other on the court is a good indication that the future of basketball in Liberty County is getting brighter.
