Liberty County YMCA Heat swimmer Sandra Scott represented Hinesville at the Short Course Yards Southeastern Age Group Sectional Championships on March 10-13 in Nashville, Tenn.

Scott was one of nine swimmers from southeast Georgia to compete against swimmers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Scott competed in the girls’ 11-12 age group.

According to Heat coach Donna Hooe, swimmers are placed in different classifications.

She said Scott was placed with a very elite group of swimmers in Class AAAA as determined by the sanctioning agency of USA Swimming. She earned the classification after finishing 10th in the 50-meter butterfly with a time of 28.13 seconds.

"What makes this swim remarkable is the fact that earlier in the morning preliminaries she jammed her thumb, which started to swell, and hit her head on the wall during a backstroke-to-breaststroke turn in the 100 individual medley," Hooe said. "Despite making the error, she qualified in the 16th spot for the B Final of the 100 IM."

Scott placed 13th in the final with a time of 1:05.55. She shaved five seconds off her personal best in the 400-meter individual medley and placed 14th overall with a time of 4:58.75.

The coach said Scott gave a solid performance Saturday morning in the 100-meter fly with a time of 1:05.59 and in the 100-meter freestyle by clocking in at 59.27.

Scott competed in three events Sunday.

She began with the 200- meter butterfly and turned in a time of 2:31.97. She followed that up by finishing the 50-meter freestyle in 27.68 and the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:51.05.
