Summer programs will be kicking into high gear as Liberty County schools prepare for break, and the Liberty County Recreation Department provides a host of summer activities suited for children of all ages.
KiDsGyM USA is an LCRD program where children learn tumbling and gymnastics. Located at the Shuman Recreation Center, the program is open to children ages 5 and older. Kids are encouraged to wear shorts, T-shirts and sneakers. A water fountain is available on site, but children also are encouraged to bring a cool beverage. The program meets every Saturday from June 4-July 30.
Volleyball camp also will be at the Shuman Recreation Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting May 31. It is open for kids ages 10-14.
Baseball camp will be June 6-9 from 9-11:30 a.m. at Liberty Independent Troop Park. It is open to kids ages 6-14.
Football camp will be from 9-11:30 a.m. June 13-16 at the Liberty County High School football field. It will be conducted by Panthers coach Kirk Warner and is open to kids ages 7-12.
Weight training at James Brown Park’s workout facility is from 4:30-5:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday beginning June 7. The early session is open to kids ages 8-12. Children 13 and older can train from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Many other camps and programs are slated to begin in July and run through August. Programs include coed kickball, basketball camp, softball camp, pool tournaments, Ping-Pong tournaments and scuba classes.
A new addition at James Brown Park, the Frisbee Disc Golf Course, will be open at 10 a.m. June 18 and July 16.
A summer splash in the pool is a great way to cool off from the heat, and the pool at Liberty Independent Troop Park’s Stafford Pavilion will have open swim sessions, swimming lessons and special family nights.
Morning and afternoon swim lessons will be available, and each two-week session is $25. Open swim is from
2-6 p.m. daily, and the entrance fee is $2. Family nights are Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:15-9 p.m. The pool also is available to rent for private parties.
