Two members of the Long County High School boys’ track team finished in the top 10 of their events at the Class 2-AA state track and field meet, held May 2-4 in Jefferson.
Fred Nelson brought home a silver medal in the long jump with a second-place finish and also took ninth place in the 100-meter dash.
“I am very proud of Fred for his accomplishment. I can’t remember the last time we had someone place and receive a medal at the state competition in track and field,” Blue Tide track and field head coach Deshon Brock said.
Also for Long County, Deonte’ Ellis qualified to compete at the state meet and he had a fine showing, finishing 10th place in the high jump.
Two athletes representing Long County were at the girls’ state track meet, which began Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. Kaylee Camp, the reigning Region 2-AA cross-country champion, was scheduled to compete in the 3200 meter race, and Alyssa Mullins was scheduled to be in the 800 race. Results will be in a future edition of the Courier.
