Bradwell Institute played host to 11 local high school teams in the Tiger Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers and Lady Tigers both finished first in their first home meet of the year.
The Lady Tigers scored 143 points for the title and the boys scored 122.5 earning first.
Boys track coach DeAndre Davis said nearly 300 spectators braved the 40 degree weather to watch the day-long meet, which featured 17 events.
Davis said he lost a lot of his veteran track stars to graduation but was especially proud of his team’s performance. Davis credits off season weightlifting in keeping his team ready.
“The kids work hard and push each other each day,” he said. “We were expecting a big showing from the kids, but winning our first invitational was big for the boys and girls. David Thornton, Rashod Harris, DeAndre’ Day, Sterling Burns, Jamorris Hill, KeAndrea Ladson, Aaliyah Howard, Alicia Santiago, Allura Robertson, Michaela Calvin, and Tierra Mathis paved the way for the teams. We are extremely happy where we are this early in the season.”
Davis said Day is currently ranked second in Region 3-AAAAA in the long jump. Harris is ranked 9th.
Lady Tiger Ladson is ranked number one in the long jump, fourth in the triple Jump and eighth in the 100-meter dash.
The boys travel to Camden on Friday for the I-95 Invitational, while the girls compete at Savannah State on Friday.
