Bradwell Institute added to its region lead with a 12-7 win against Groves on Tuesday night at home. Despite three errors and 10 runners left on base, the Tigers rallied in the later innings to put away the Rebels.
Groves took a 1-0 lead in the first, but BI tied the score in the bottom of the inning after Jacob Dill drove in Leonard Felton, who got on after being hit by a pitch, moved to second on a stolen base and advanced to third on a base hit from Aaron Malpass.
It was a seesaw game from there.
The Tigers showed patience at the plate and racked up 10 hits. But Groves took advantage of Bradwell mistakes to keep the game reasonably close.
Eric Wells got the win for the Tigers. He worked four innings and gave up two earned runs off seven hits. Mitch Rogers pitched three innings of relief for Bradwell. He struck out seven in three innings of work and gave up three earned runs off of three hits.
Wells led the Tigers’ hit parade, going 3 for 5 with three singles, an RBI and a run scored. Malpass finished the game with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, which included a single and double along with two RBIs and three runs scored. Rogers was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and two runs scored. Dill, Felton, Garret McCorkle, Chris Rafferty and Matthew Brown had one hit each.
The weather has cost Bradwell two games this week. The Tigers were scheduled to play Monday, but it was rained out along with Wednesday’s game against McIntosh County Academy.
It has not been decided when either game will be made up.
Bradwell moved to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in Region 3-AAAAA after defeating Groves on Tuesday. The Tigers remain tied for the region lead with Jenkins and Camden. Bradwell travels to Savannah today to take on old rival Benedictine. The Cadets are back in Region 3-AAAAA.
