The Walker Middle School Wildcat basketball team last week won the Southeast Georgia Middle School Conference title by defeating Arthur Williams Middle School, 40-25, in the championship game in Jesup.
The Wildcats went into the tournament as the No. 2 seed and swept through the competition by beating Ware County, 42-33, in the first round and Waycross Middle School, 40-28, in the semifinals.
The tournament didn’t go quite as well for the WMS girls’ team. The Lady Wildcats, who went into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, lost to no. 3 Ware County, 40-25, in the first round.
The eventual winner of the girls’ tournament was Martha Puckett Middle School, who beat Waycross, 39-24, in the final.
“Congratulations to the Martha Puckett girls and the Long County boys, the 2013 Southeast Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference basketball champions … Go Wildcats,” WMS athletic director Dennis Pattison said.
“The conference would like to thank Martha Puckett for hosting the conference basketball tournament,” Pattison added. “A special thanks goes to coach Brockington, coach Jody Grooms, Nicole Landon and the administration at Martha Puckett for a job well done.”
