The Coastal Xplosion All-Stars are seeking members for a new special-needs competition cheerleading squad, which will be begin in May.

"With this new team, we want to show others what talent these special kids have and showcase their unique abilities," Coastal Xplosion coach Sammi Hester said.

According to Hester, the program will be set up in Jesup at the Leaps and Bounds Gym, and it will be offered to both males and females of all ages and all abilities. The program is open to surrounding counties as well.

"This program will be offered to kids of all ages and also any adult who is on a level where they would feel comfortable being a member of this team," she said.

Hester, a certified special-education teacher and coach, said she has coached special athletes in the past.

"Some of these kids have never been a part of an organized team. When they put on that cheerleading outfit and go out and compete, their faces and every face watching them lights up … every time I have ever been at a competition they always get a standing ovation," she said.

Hester said that though the program now only offers competitive cheerleading, she hopes that programs such as soccer and softball will become available.

"Anyone in this area is welcome to come out and be a part of this team," she said. "With us being in Jesup, we are in a great location to get kids from Hinesville, Fort Stewart, Liberty County, Long County, Tattnall County and of course also in Wayne County. But it doesn’t matter where you live, if you want to come out and be a part of our team, we want you."

A meeting for parents and special athletes will be from 6-7 p.m. April 28 at the Leaps and Bounds Gym. For more information, call 229-977-0390 or go to
