Long Co. goes 1-1 in region play

The hits were scarce for Long County High School as the Blue Tide fell 11-1 to Benedictine Military School on Friday. Antonio Golden, pictured above, was one of only three Blue Tide batters to get a hit against the Cadets.

The Long County High School baseball team went 1-1 in region 2-AA play for the week beating Bryan County but falling to Benedictine Military School.
Playing in Pembroke on Tuesday, the Blue Tide (7-11 overall, 3-5 region) had one of its better outings of the year with a 10-5 win over the Redskins (5-8, 0-6).
But as well as things went early in the week, they went just that badly Friday, as the Cadets beat the Tide 11-1 in Ludowici. In that game, Benedictine (16-4, 10-0) outhit Long County 8-3, as Chipper Wiley got the win for the Savannah team.
The Blue Tide’s bats struggled, with only Antonio Golden, Brian Lester and Tripp Stapleton getting hits. Pitcher Josh Gordon got the start and loss for Long County.
On Saturday, Long County was back at home taking on Bryan County again, but results fwere not available by press time.
The Blue Tide will be back on the road Monday, taking on the Claxton High School (11-4) in a non-region matchup at 5:30 p.m., and then McIntosh County (0-12) in a region game at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Darien.
The 2-AA standings currently have Benedictine on top, followed by Bacon County at 6-1, Jeff Davis (7-2), Vidalia (5-4), Long County (3-5), Bryan County (0-6), Groves High School (0-6) and McIntosh County (0-7).
According to MaxPreps.com, Benedictine is ranked No. 5, Bacon County is No. 6 and Jeff Davis County is No. 9 in the AA state rankings.
