The Fort Stewart Youth Sports held a Football Jamboree this past Saturday and teams from Garden City and Long County came down to see how their teams stacked up against each other.
The ages of the teams were 7-8 and 9-10, and there were four teams in each of the age divisions.
In the nine and ten year old division the teams were the Redskins, Rams, Raiders, and the Long County Junior Blue Tide.
In the first game the Rams defeated the Redskins by a score of 6-0, while in the second game the Raiders won against the Jr. Blue Tide by the same score.
In the third game the Raiders and the Redskins had a hotly contested battle, which ended up in a tie 6-6, while the final nine and ten year old game went to the Rams as they beat the Jr. Blue Tide 6-0.
In the seven and eight year old division, the teams were the Steelers, Dolphins, Cardinals, and the Long County Little Blue Tide.
In the first game, the Steelers were too much for the Dolphins as the black and gold won the game 14-0, while the second game ended up in 0-0 tie between the Cardinals and the Little Blue Tide.
The third game was also won by the Steelers. This time they beat the Cardinals 12-0, while the Little Blue Tide got their second tie, with a 0-0 contest against the Dolphins.
Even though Long County’s Little Blue Tide didn’t score in either game, they were led on the offense by Dillon Stewart who had big runs of 13, 22 and 35 yards.
On the defense, they were led by big plays made by Joshua Gordon who made a touchdown saving tackle against the Dolphins, a fumble recovery by Dalton Sanders against the Cardinals, and two fumble recoveries by Holden Riddle against both the Dolphins and Cardinals.
Head Coach Bruce Green of the Long County Little Blue Tide team also noted solid play by Hunter McPhearson and L.G. Williams.
Assistant coach Lee Blanchard of the Junior Blue Tide team said the coaches were proud of the play of their entire team, but the players still have areas that need improvement.
Fort Stewart Youth Sports Director Jerome Washington said, “These jamborees are good because it helps the coaches see where their teams are, and see what they need to do before the games start.”
“We’re glad that Long County and Garden City came out to play with us today,” he said. “It promotes harmony between the counties and Fort Stewart. And it’s good for the kids.”
