NEW ORLEANS — Georgia Southern goalkeeper Katie Merson has earned the Eagles’ first Sun Belt Conference award when she was named the league’s defensive player of the week on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagle netminder picked up two victories to open the year and pitched her 15th career shutout on Sunday against UNC-Wilmington.
Merson is unbeaten in seven-straight matches versus opponents not in the five major conferences.
She allowed one goal on Friday in the Eagles’ 2-1 win at Francis Marion while making three saves off six total shots to open the 2014 season.
Two days later, Merson stopped five shots in a 2-0 win over UNC-Wilmington.
Georgia Southern is back on the road this weekend with a pair of games on the plains of Alabama.
The Eagles face Indiana on Friday afternoon before playing the home side, Auburn, on Sunday in a game that can be seen on SEC Network.
