After losing seven of eight basketball games, Liberty County has rebounded by winning four of their last five and they are hungry for more.
The Panthers (8-9, 4-2 Region 3-AAA [A]) defeated McIntosh County Academy (8-10, 6-3 Region 2-AA) 65-35 on Saturday to complete the sweep of the Buccaneers. The Panthers won 48-44 in Darien earlier in the season.
“We got out on them quick and kept them off balance most of the night,” LCHS coach Willie Graham said. “We were aggressive on the defensive boards all night.”
Lazarus Baggs had a good night rebounding and boxing out.
Despite the success, Graham said his team is still scuffling and has a ways to go.
“We are still doing some of the same things wrong as the first half of the season but not as frequently,” he said. “We’re not where we need to be mentally. Those are some of the mistakes we need to correct.”
A reason the Panthers are playing better is that Graham has found his starting lineup so the players can focus on one position rather focusing on several positions.
Sophomores Emmanuel Fuller and Terrell Johnson are starting at the forward positions with Emmanuel Fuller coming off the bench to play forward.
Donrico Wingfall is stepping up to play point guard, leaving Barry Drummond available to play shooting guard.
Roderick Jones also is starting at guard.
Rion Brown, a freshman, and Baggs are also contributing big for the Panthers.
The Panthers, who seemed to be in trouble early in the year, are still alive for the sub-region title. They trail Burke County by one game with four games remaining.
Liberty County’s game with Richmond Hill on Tuesday was not complete in time for press.
