Day-two of the Gentlemen’s Classic Tournament in Statesboro saw the Liberty Panthers tipping-off against a formidable Blue Devils home team in a fast pace game that gave the Panthers a 77-70.
The 13-0 Panthers were led by Division I signees Rion Brown and Jordan McRae who sank in 29 and 21 points, respectively
Panther coach Willie Graham said he is pleased with several players who are giving him consistent minutes as the season progresses.
“Julian Stokes started out a little rusty at first, coming straight out of football,” Graham said. “But he is leveling out and plays defense well and is solid on offense.”
The coach said Greg Richardson’s shooting game is coming together and he is playing better defense. Another individual Graham said is developing along is Melvin King.
“He is still working into the game, but he is a great athlete,” the coach said.
As a whole, the team effort helped the Panthers take a 38-29 lead at halftime. The Blue Devils battled back to come within five points near the end of the third.
The Panther squad quickly built a 65-54 lead despite and a technical foul against McRae, forcing him to sit out for the remainder of regulation.
Wednesday night, the Panthers were set to play local rival Bradwell Institute. In their first match this season the Liberty squad took a 20-point win against the Tigers, who are currently 1-8.
Graham said his defense is generally a man defensive scheme and said he will open with the defensive scheme against the Tigers and adjust if needed.
Due to early holiday deadlines the scores from Wednesday’s BI vs. Liberty game will be posted on the Courier’s sports Web-site as soon as they become available. The full story and coaches comments will be in an upcoming edition.
