The LCHS Panther sprinters, runners and jumpers had their first track meet of the year Tuesday at Savannah State University against the track teams of Savannah area schools.

The Panther boys won the 200, 400 and 4X400-meter races and relays as well as the one-mile run on the track. The boys took first in the discus throw and shot put field events.

"The girls are young but look great as they won second in about every event and took first in the high jump, long and triple jump and discus throw," assistant track coach Nathan Mims said.

"For us to do well in the region we have to hit more of the field events, become more active in the field events and score more points," track coach Daryl McCulley said. "That is what took the boys to victory last year. We have some seniors back this season including some that just finished basketball. Of course we look to our seniors to help our season."

Seniors Roderick Jones, Donte Jones, Demetrius Stinson and Aaron Bennett are among the stars the coach said should give them another exceptional season.

"We have a larger group of girls this season and a lot of younger kids, freshmen and sophomores that we are looking to develop," McCulley added.

For the girls, McCulley said he looks for seniors Nazarine Hines, Shontavia Clay and Tyshunn Williams to lead the squad.

"We should be able to run more relays this season," McCulley said.

The coach said he is impressed with the new girls who came out this season like Meisha Quarterman, Neisha Walthour and Unika Willimas.

He said Unika Williams will help in field events as a high jumper. The team is also looking to pick up a pole vaulter. The coach said the boys should be strong in the shot put and discus throws again this year.
