Leading the pack against the Savannah area schools the Liberty County High School Panther track teams took first place wins with the boys earning 115 points and the girls earning 112 at a meet at Savannah State University on Tuesday.

According to assistant coach Nathan Mims, Windsor Forest’s boys’ squad earned 52 points and the Lady Rebels of Groves received 65. The other schools competing were Beach, Groves, Johnson, Benedictine, Savannah High, Jenkins, St. Vincent Academy and Savannah Arts Academy.

Mims said junior Lady Panther standout Neisha "Nina" Walthour scored 30 points, winning all her events; 100 hurdles, 4x100m, and 4x400m.

"Nina is our captain and works hard every day," Mims said. "She shows vast improvements and competes harder at every meet."

Mims said senior Lady Panther Toni Walker got 24 points in three events when she took first in the triple jump, landing a distance of 34’8," first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.2 seconds and fourth place in the long jump.

"This was her first track meet for the Lady Panthers," Mims said.

"Nolan Lowe led the boys with 26 points with his first place victory in the 400-meter with a time of 49.9 and second in 4x100 and 4x400. Nolan has improved every track meet and I would look for him in state."

Mims said both squads continue to improve and should make a good run at the Bob Hayes Invitational in Jacksonville on March 21. It’s the largest track meet in the Southeast.

In the meantime the Panthers were set to host their first track meet at home yesterday against Statesboro.
