Liberty County won its second straight sub-region game, defeating Benedictine 5-3 Tuesday.
Skyler Hoffer earned the win, pitching a complete game and striking out 11 Cadet batters. He surrendered one earned run and allowed four hits.
Hoffer also was a force at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a homerun.
His two-run homerun over the leftfield fence in the fourth inning gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Later in the inning, Henry Barrett knocked in Byron Calahan with a single to right field.
Hoffer knocked in another run in the fifth inning, scoring Brad Harris.
The Cadets (0-4 Region 3-AAA south) scored a run in the sixth inning and were poised for more, with runners on the corners and no outs.
However, heads-up defense by the Panthers (5-10, 2-2) ended the Cadet rally.
Catcher Aaron Hoffer caught a high pop-up behind the plate for the first out. Next, right fielder Justin Eaton caught a deep fly ball and immediately rifled it to Calahan at first base to double up the Cadet runner, before the runner from third scored.
The Panthers now have momentum heading into Saturday’s sub-region contest at South Effingham, who is undefeated in the sub-region.
