Panthers wrap up regular season Friday

Liberty County plays host to Pierce County on Friday night in a Region 2-AAA football game.

The Bears are 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the region, and are led by junior running back John Jones, who has 946 yards and six touchdowns on 156 carries.

Quarterback Jermaine Brewton, a freshman, has completed 54 of 105 passes for 816 yards and six touchdowns. He’s been intercepted nine times.

Parker Peagler has 22 catches for 445 yards and four touchdowns to lead Bear receivers.

Pierce County has region wins over Brantley (48-18), Long County (34-0) and Tattnall County (31-22). The Bears fell 13-11 to Appling County on Oct. 27.

Liberty (6-3, 4-0) is unbeaten in Region 2-AAA and is led by junior running back Kris Coleman, who has 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns on 149 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Dionte Bowens has completed 29 of 63 passes for 731 yards and six touchdowns. He’s thrown seven interceptions.

Jaleel Gilbert leads the team in receptions with 14 catches for 312 yards and two touchdowns. He also has an 87-yard kickoff return for a TD.

Markel Johnson, Alvin Roberts and Nolan Dickens are the Panthers’ leading tacklers, with 80, 73 and 71 tackles, respectively.

The Panthers, who started the season ranked as high as No. 6 in Class AAA, dropped three of their first five games before winning four straight region contests.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
