Panthers take on Jenkins

Liberty County High School (1-1) will take on Jenkins (2-0) on Friday night at Savannah Memorial Stadium.
The Panthers are coming off a thrilling 36-34 comeback win over Statesboro. Some of Liberty County’s leading performers include:

Offense

Rushing: Kris Coleman ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Quarterback Dionte Bowens carried six times for 53 yards and a touchdown. Four other panthers combined for 81 yards, as Liberty finished with 45 carries for 288 yards.

Passing: Bowens completed 4 of 9 passes for 50 yards and was intercepted once. Gage Sills completed 2 of 4 passes for 15 yards and was intercepted twice.

Receiving: Russell Dandy caught one pass or 30 yards. Jaleel Gilbert had two catches for 25 yards. Coleman had a pair of catches for 10 yards.

Additional scoring: Gilbert scored on an 87-yard kickoff return.

Defense

Tackles: Alvin Roberts was credited with 12 tackles, 11 of them solo, and three were tackles for losses.
Markel Johnson, Traveon Freeman, Sisquo Westbrook and Enrika Tolbert had six tackles each.

Sacks: Nolan Dickens, Traveon Freeman and Tramel Walthour each had a sack for Liberty County.

Interceptions: Johnson and Dandy each had an interception. Johnson returned his 43 yards for a touchdown.

Blocks: Roberts was credited with a blocked field goal.

Kicking: Alec Sutton was 5 of 6 on extra points. He punted 3 times for a 32.3 average.

John makes Cardinals’ roster

Former Bradwell Institute and Georgia State University football player Ulrick John made the 53 man roster for the Arizona Cardinals. Teams had until Saturday to meet roster requirements set forth by the National Football League.

John is listed as an offensive tackle. He was the first Liberty County native drafted by the NFL when he was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He suffered a leg injury in his first preseason game with the Colts and was placed on the Colts practice squad. He was later signed by the Miami Dolphins.

He played in two preseason games with the Dolphins. In October 2016, John was signed by the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will play at the Detroit Lions at 1 p.m. Sunday.

LeCounte plays in UGA win

Former Liberty County High School football player Richard LeCounte saw action as a true freshman in the University of Georgia’s 31-10 win over Appalachian State Saturday.

LeCounte had five total tackles, four of which were solo.
According to UGA athletics, 17 freshmen saw action in Saturday’s opening season win.

Lovelady faring well
Former First Presbyterian Christian Academy Richard Lovelady continues to celebrate success on the baseball field.
The left-handed hurler currently plays for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

According to royalsreivew.com, Lovelady came out of the pen for three appearances this week and gave up no runs in five and a third innings. He had five strikeouts, one walk and allowed three hits.

Lovelady was signed by the Royals in June 2016 and assigned to the Arizona Royals the next day. One month later Lovelady was assigned to the Idaho Falls Chukars.
