Liberty County boasts several AAU basketball teams. Unfortunately, they play most of their games on the road in places like Atlanta, Memphis, Tenn and Orlando, Fla.
This weekend, hoop fans are in luck as seven teams, with youngsters ranging from 13-17 compete in the River Street Classic in Savannah.
The action starts Friday and concludes with championship games Sunday. Sixty teams from across the Southeast will compete.
Tournament organizer Chris Stacy is excited and said several scouts will attend.
“A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to see local AAU talent and this is a chance to see what the kids and the coaches are doing,” he said. “There is a lot of good basketball in this area and we’re trying to bring some exposure.”
Admission is $6 Friday, $8 Saturday and $7 Sunday. Customers receive a wristband, which will be honored at all venues.
Venues hosting games include Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), The Savannah Aquatics and Recreation Center (ARCH), Savannah State University (SSU) and Savannah High School (SHS). Sunday’s championships will be at AASU.
