When the Long County Lady Blue Tide softball team faced off against the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets a few weeks ago, it was an offensive showdown that lasted nearly three hours. The Lady Tide lost that game 14-12 and looked to get some revenge in the second game of the three-game series on Tuesday, September 10.
It was an early string of runs that did the Lady Tide in against the 8th-ranked Jackets, but it was not for a lack of trying as they fell 6-5.
The Jackets opened the first with three straight singles to give them a 1-0 lead and put one on first and third with no outs. An error brought home another run before a sacrifice fly got a third across the plate as they led 3-0.
The Jackets added to their lead with a two-run homer in the second inning.
The Tide got their first hit of the game with a Leah Denmark double, but they could not get their offense going just yet, and SEB carried a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth, Jersi Lester turned a double play, turning a snag to a stretching Addison Moss at first base.
With one out on the board, Lester and Ainsley Anderson each singled before Lana Lewis reached on an error at first to score a run. A Denmark single brought home two more runs to cut the SEB lead to 5-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, a pair of singles led to an insurance run for the Jackets. The Tide had one more chance and three outs to score three runs.
They scored two.
Miley Maulden singled to open the bottom of the inning before Ciara O’Brien reached on an error that brought home the freshman catcher to make the score 6-4.
Lewis reached on an error that allowed her to get to second and O’Brien to cross the plate to make the score 6-5 with no outs on the board. The Jackets, though, retired the next three batters in order.
With the loss, the Lady Tide fall to 5-8 and 4-3 in the region. The team travel to play another key region game against Calvary Day on Thursday, September 12.
