SAVANNAH — This weekend’s RiverStreet Classic did not start off the way the South Georgia Kings 16-under team had hoped, losing 54-51 to the Riverdale Soul at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
The Kings, one of the Southeast’s premier AAU basketball teams was without two of their leading players. Point guard Darrell Jackson was playing for his high school Savannah High and shooting guard Joshua Shelton had to work. But, Kings coach Jesse Fleming said his players should be back for the rest of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Rayshawn Mitchell had a good game, leading the team with 20 points.
Liberty County High School’s Terrell Johnson hit big buckets down the stretch, including a three-pointer to pull the Kings within one (41-40) with five minutes remaining, scoring 11 points. He finished the game with 11 points.
Riverdale point guard Dante Turnipseed led his team with 21 points and did a superb job running the floor.
Other scorers for the Kings included Nate Drayton with 8 and James McRae, Mike Hendrix and James Scott scored 4 apiece.
Mitchell scored the first bucket for the Kings 23 seconds into the contest.
Saturday’s game was not complete in time for press.
