The track athletes of team We Run It, who understand it takes endurance and continuous training to maintain a competitive edge, have participated in three meets to date.

The team went to Orlando, Fla., during Memorial Day weekend and competed in the Golden South Classic, an Adidas sponsored event.

Tuskegee-bound football and track athlete Aaron Bennett won first in the discus throw, clearing 169 feet, 1 and a half inches. Bennett also placed fourth in the shot put, hitting 52 feet, 1 and a quarter inches.

According to the final results posted on goldensouth.com, Jana Jones took fourth place in discus with a throw of 114 feet, 3 and half inches. Jones finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 10 and half inches.

Briannae Gadson won third in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 2 and a half inches, and Unika Williams tied for third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches.

We Run It coach Nathan Mims said his team had a great time in Orlando.

The squad also competed June 5 in Atlanta in the USATF Georgia Association Regional Tournament.

"This was the qualifying meet for the USATF Georgia Association Championships," Mims said. "The whole team qualified for the championship meets. Our throwers earned first and second in their age groups."

At the USATF Georgia Association Championship, the squad’s third meet, Jones took first in the shot put for the young women’s division, and Gadson took first in the intermediate division of the shot put. They cleared 33 feet, 3 inches and 33 feet, 6 and a half inches, respectively.

Courtney Bennett won second place in the shot put, hitting 32 feet, 9 inches, and JaVoni Canty won fifth place with a toss of 26 feet, 7 inches.

The team qualified to compete at the regional tournament July 8-11 in North Carolina, and if the team does well it will qualify the athletes for this year’s Junior Olympics in Sacramento, Calif.

Mims said the team needs the community’s support, especially if they qualify to make the trip to California.
