ATHENS — The third annual Countdown to Kickoff charity event featuring more than 50 former Georgia football standouts, including current NFL players, is slated for July 19 at the University of Georgia's Woodruff Practice Fields off Lumpkin Street from 3-6 p.m.
In addition, fans will have the opportunity to join Georgia coaches and players at the Countdown to Kickoff Golf Tournament scheduled for July 18 at the UGA Golf Course. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 11. Later, a Sic 'Em Auction and Awards Reception will be at 7 p.m. at The Classic Center. Event sponsors as well as fans will have a chance at bidding for Bulldog memorabilia and unique experiences within the Georgia football program, including a behind-the-scenes gameday experience.
Benefiting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Georgia Transplant Foundation, as well as the Children's Tumor Foundation and the University of Georgia College of Education, there are activities for fans of all ages from games, face painting, training camp drills, autograph and photo sessions. Mascot Hairy Dawg and the UGA cheerleaders will be there and the Redcoat Band will perform.
Tickets are $30 each. A family pack costs $100, which includes four tickets and a pennant for player autographs.
"It's good to be able to give back to the fans and raise money for charity at the same time," said David Greene, former UGA quarterback and current member of the Kansas City Chiefs, who is hosting the event. "We feel like it is a win-win situation to give back and let the fans interact with the players they love to watch."
Other organizers of the event include former NFL first round draft choice Matt Stinchcomb and current NFL star Jon Stinchcomb.
"It's a fun way to go about supporting charities," said Matt Stinchcomb, who played for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers following his Georgia career. "We get to see former teammates and some of the guys who are wearing the 'G' now as well as many of the fans. We do it to impact pediatric healthcare philanthropy. It's a win-win situation."
The 2007 "Countdown to Kickoff" charity event sold out and attracted 1,300 fans. The event raised $121,000 for four Georgia charities.
