The Long County Blue Tide basketball season has tipped off and on Friday, December 4, they opened their home slate as they hosted non-region rival Wayne County. Both games were hotly contested, but the Blue Tide fell short on rolling past their rivals.

The Lady Yellow Jackets got out to a quick start in the first quarter as they went 3-4 from three-point range and jumped out to an 11-3 lead.

The second quarter was much more closely-contested as the Lady Jackets were just able to outscore the Lady Tide 9-7 in the quarter. The Lady Tide were able to get some good production on offense as both Rebekah Gordon and Jada Young scored down low as the score was 20-10 going into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Jackets started to take over in the second half as the Lady Tide only scored one basket from the field. However, the home team did go 6-10 from the free throw line, which is a positive for the Lady Tide.

Wayne County went on an 8-2 run early in the second half to take a 28-12 lead. Despite sophomore Adryanna Harley scoring six of her 10 points in the quarter, the Yellow Jackets held a 34-18 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The run in the third quarter was just enough for the Lady Jackets to move on to a 41-26 win over the Lady Tide. Long County falls to 1-4 on the year, but did get production from Harley with 10 points and three steals.

The boys took the court and Long County had control in most of the game, but a late run by the Yellow Jackets gave them the big rivalry win.

The first quarter saw Velsick, Germany transfer Josh Valembrun have a great home debut for the Blue Tide. He hit a big three point shot and scored seven points as the Tide led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Yellow Jackets open up with an 8-3 run to make the score 17-4 early, but some good production from junior Cameryn Johnson led to the Tide holding a 24-19 lead going into halftime.

Once again, it was another good run by the Yellow Jackets in the third quarter as they tied the game up at 29 with a 10-5 run. Despite senior Tostadas Pouncey hitting three of five three point shots in the quarter, the Tide trailed 37-35 after a big dunk from Jacket senior B.J. Wright.

The Yellow Jackets went on an 8-2 run to open the fourth quarter as they built a 45-37 lead, the biggest lead of either team. The Tide were not able to recover from this deficit as they fell 56-49.

Valembrun finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Pouncey added 13 points and seven assists. With the loss drops the Tide to 1-3 on the year. Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, December 12 as they host another non-region rival in Liberty County.
