The hometown Ludowici fans got a real treat Tuesday as Long County kicked off the basketball season with wins over Bacon County.
In the early game, the Lady Tide jumped all over the Lady Raiders, winning 57-12. The leading scorers for Long County were Jakayla Porter and Ellexxus Wrighton, who each had 10 points, Patra London, who added 11, and Anazha Kincaid, who led all shooters with 12.
Lady Tide head coach Brian Todd said he was pleased with the win, especially with the defense.
“We came out with a lot of energy and got after them,” Todd said. “We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, but it’s early. We did play good defense throughout all four quarters.”

He added that there is still room for improvement. “We have a lot of work to do before the region schedule starts, but I have no doubt we will come out and work hard every day to improve”, said Todd.
In the later game, the Blue Tide didn’t win as easily as their counterparts, but still had a solid outing, beating the Raiders 79-70. Leading scorers for them were Stephon Hugley, who had eight points, Christian Bass, who added 11, Henry Blair, who put up 21, and Terry Smith, who led all shooters with 24 points. Bass also snagged eight rebound.

Head coach Deshon Brock said that for most of the night his team played well, but at times there were problems for the defense.
“I think our pace and tempo were great for the most part,” Brock said. “We got stagnant a couple of times but for the most part we played at our tempo. We still have to work on our defense, 70 points is a lot to give up. So we have some things to fix.”
He also praised the individual efforts of Hugley and Ryhiem Izzard.
“I think Ryhiem Izzard and Stephon Hugley did great jobs of taking Bacon’s Lane Foster out of the game,” the coach said. “He is a very good player that we will see playing at the next level one day, and they made him a non-factor.”

Over the weekend, the Blue Tide took part in the Effingham Shootout, but results from the tournament were not available. Monday, both teams will see action with the Lady Tide playing in the Girls Night Out Tournament in Statesboro and the Blue Tide playing in the Jeff Davis Tip-Off in Hazlehurst.
