In a game that was a lot closer than the final score shows, the Tigers took the sting out of the Yellow Jackets inside the Tigers’ den Saturday night.
The Yellow Jackets knocked in the first basket but the Tigers came back and Brandon Hayes hit a three-point shot giving the Tigers the lead early in the first quarter.
The Tigers started the second period with a nine-point lead over the Wayne County Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the gap with a few steals and lay-ups to bring them within five points at the half.
The Tigers quickly regrouped in the third period and opened up a 10-point lead. But the Yellow Jackets had Tay Hardy, Vince Merritt and Eric Daniels hitting the three point shots from mid court to keep the Yellow Jackets within two points at the end of the third period (36-34).
The Tigers began a defensive rally late in the fourth quarter and pulled away to a 15-point lead and held on to win 57-42.
“I thought we played well defensively,” Tiger head coach David Jones said. “Wayne County had some kids that were dropping three-point shots from far away but we began to hold them defensively. Both teams played hard. The margin of victory at the end was not indicative of the game, it was closer than that.”
Jones said Jarvis Wadsworth had double digits in points as well as rebounds; and he continues to be impressed with Brandon Hayes.
“Robert Sims, Kentrell Hargrove Jarvis and Brandon, they kept it up, they all play hard and kept us in there,” he said.
The Tigers were scheduled to host Camden County Tuesday night. Jones said the Camden County Wildcats has a pretty good program and is usually ranked within the top four.
The Tigers will host Jenkins Friday night before hitting the road against Glynn on Saturday. The Tigers return home for a game against Brunswick on Dec. 18.
