Walker Middle School established it’s first ever track and field team last month and, according to the coach, the team has done well at its first two meets.

Last Thursday, the team traveled to Nahunta to take on the middle schools from Brantley and McIntosh counties. The Wildcats finished the meet in second place while the Lady Wildcats finished third.

Coming in first place for the boys was Malick Williams in the 800 meter run and Chris LaRochester in the 110 meter hurdles. LaRochester also won the 400 meter run and got second place in shot put.

Coming in third place was Vanda Vereen in both the long jump and in the 100 meter dash. Williams got third in the discus throw. The boy’s 4x400 relay team also got third place.

Coming in first for the Lady Wildcats was Raven Rose in the 55 meter hurdles, Autumn King in the 1,600 meter run and Kathy Laura in the discus throw.

Kadeja Green got second place in the shot put. Naomey Guadalupe finished third in the discus throw and Rose leapt her way to third in the long jump.

According to head coach Deirdre Mansel, the team has been practicing since the first of February.

"The team practices Monday through Wednesday and they have been working very hard. This is the first year the school has offered this program, and I’m very proud of how all of them are doing," she Mansel.

The team’s next meet is this Thursday in Baxley.
