It is easy to be green in April! Keep Liberty County Beautiful’s fourth annual Earth Day celebration is scheduled for April 22, national Earth Day. It’s is a great time to have fun and celebrate our fascinating planet. The celebration highlights all things green each year with games, crafts, displays and fun. Did I mention fun already? Well, I have this theory that fun and education blend well.
So, I guess I can let you in on a little secret: Earth Day is really an educational day designed to teach people to take care of our environment. We just disguised the learning with fun — and it’s free, too. Earth Day is celebrated around the world in a variety of ways, but in our community, we set up exhibits and displays, play games and make crafts. Each activity focuses on ways to “go green” and make a difference in the planet.
Earth Day’s “The Green Scene” will be from 3-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the former Brewton-Parker Campus, 2140 E. Oglethorpe Highway in Flemington. The location is new this year and it will give us some room to expand and provide more games, activities and parking for visitors. Event organizers are grateful to the Liberty County School System for letting us use the space for our event. We also sincerely appreciate the support of our sponsors: the Liberty County Health Department, Georgia Power Company, the Liberty County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Prevent Child Abuse Liberty and our municipal partners.
Four years ago, we started the Earth Day event in partnership with a few local municipal governments — the cities of Hinesville, Flemington, Walthourville and Allenhurst, as well as Liberty and Long counties. These government entities work together to deter stormwater pollution problems locally and to increase resident awareness about the impact of stormwater pollution on our waterways. The Earth Day celebration is one of several ways we promote stormwater pollution awareness in nearby communities.
KLCB also focuses on ways to conserve natural resources, particularly water — one of our most precious commodities. Responsible community members know it is critical to support the effective use and re-use of natural resources to save energy, money and to protect our planet. Haven’t we lived a little selfishly for too long? We need all of our resources and we need to act now to use and recycle those resources so generations to come will have the resources they need.
The Green Scene Earth Day event will address a range of environmentally significant topics, including litter prevention, trees, proper cigarette butt disposal, recycling, composting, green energy products, organic gardening and nature and animal exhibits.
Some of highlights of this year’s event will be the ever-popular Earth Day sidewalk chalk art contest, which is open to all ages; environmental exhibits by local 4-H club members; a giant, 8-foot “Earth ball” used in games; and the “dead fish” shirt stenciling craft. We will also have several new events, including a geocashing activity for adults and older kids and a mini-version — called an eco-egg scavenger hunt — for kids. There will be music and food, and raffle prizes every half hour.
More than 80 booths, exhibits, games and crafts will all be free. And they all sneak in eco-friendly information that children and families can use. Goodwill Industries will collect electronics, books and household goods for recycling. We also have some special guests lined up, including Curby the Recycling Robot and a mysterious water fortune telling gypsy.
So join us. More than 700 kids and families came through last year and we have room for even more this year, so make your plans now. It is free and it is fun. But watch out — you might turn “green” in the process!
