As you’re driving around town, do you ever notice places that could use a good scrubbing or some TLC? Perhaps you’ve spotted a business or a residence with a ragged, overgrown lawn. Or maybe you’ve passed a worn-out structure in need of a paint job.
We are fortunate at Keep Liberty Beautiful because each quarter, we focus on the things that are right with our community — particularly our business community. During September, we will take nominations for the next round of Win-dex Awards, which honor attractive area businesses.
I have always been a “glass is half-full” kind of girl because I like to focus on positive situations and encourage people to move in that direction. I have never seen negativity generate lasting results.
About two years ago, we implemented this recognition program with our partner, the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce. KLB and the chamber understand the value of having attractive, successful businesses in our community. Each quarter, we get many nominations for businesses that we are proud to have in this area. This past quarter was actually one of the hardest to judge because we had a number of fantastic nominees. So, if your favorite business didn’t win, please re-nominate them for this round.
We will take nominations for the most attractive businesses of the quarter — large and small — from Sept. 1-30. Every business can keep its exterior or storefront neat and the landscaping attractive, no matter the business’ budget or size. With the Win-dex Award, size does not matter. Everyone can compete for recognition.
So take this opportunity to voice your opinion. Look around and share your thoughts on the most attractive area businesses. Nomination forms are available online at our website, www.keeplibertybeautiful.org, and on the weekly chamber’s e-newsletter. Nomination forms also will be available at the chamber building on Highway 84 and at the Keep Liberty Beautiful office.
Forms completed by Sept. 30 can be dropped off, mailed or faxed to 880-4777. Too busy for that? You can call in your nomination by dialing 880-4888, but make sure you clearly state the name and address of the business and the reason you feel it should be recognized. Each quarter, local winners receive recognition plaques and signs to display at their businesses.
Here are points to consider:
• Is the exterior clean and litter free? Now, of course, that’s part of the criteria.
• Is the landscape well-maintained?
• Is the building exterior attractive and not in need of repair?
• Is the frontage property mowed and litter-free? Or is the sidewalk and parking area clean? Is this area free of cigarette butts?
• Are there attractive plantings decorating the exterior?
• Has the business recently upgraded or renovated? This could be a simple paint job to spruce things up, a full-scale renovation or a new building.
• Is the entryway inviting?
• Is the business owner or manager a responsible merchant who works to maintain the roadways near the property, keeping them attractive and litter-free?
• What other reasons make this business a standout?
Big or small, any business can enhance its property by keeping the area clean and inviting. We want to salute those businesses that do. Thanks to all of the merchants and retailers who put forth the extra effort. This quarterly award program is our way of showing our appreciation.
