Take the Water Smart Pledge
Would you like to conserve water and maybe bring a thousand dollars to our community to improve a green space? It is as easy as a click of a button. I am asking you to do just that this week. In the last year, many of us have realized that we cannot take water for granted. This past year’s drought in Georgia has been a wake up call. We have to learn to incorporate water conservation practices in our daily lives. Water is our most precious resource. In an effort to conserve water this spring and summer, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and Keep America Beautiful have joined forces with baseball’s top groundskeeper, David Mellor. Their mission has been to implement an educational campaign to help homeowners learn the simple steps they can take to conserve water.
By taking the Scotts Water Smart Pledge on-line, homeowners — like you and me — can learn how to grow and maintain healthy lawns while saving thousands of gallons of water every year. Beyond saving water, homeowners who take the Scotts Water Smart Pledge will be entered for the chance to win several great prizes. Participants who take the pledge and name Keep Liberty Beautiful as their Keep America Beautiful affiliate will also put our community in the running for grant money to build or improve a community green space:
•    Every week during this limited project, Scotts is awarding $1,000 to a KAB affiliate that has the most pledges during that week.
•    At the end of the 10 week period, one KAB affiliate with the most pledges will win a $10,000 grand prize to put towards building or improving a green space for their community.
The weekly winners and grand prize winner are determined based on the number of people who take the “pledge” in their community. So, we have chosen this week between today June 1 and Friday, June 6, to ask everyone in Liberty County to take the pledge.  It is easy and quick. Just go to http://www.scottswatersmart.com/water_smart_pledge.  In less than a couple of minutes (even if you are a slow typist, like me), you can answer a few questions and click on Keep Liberty County Beautiful on the affiliate list and you have completed the pledge. Don’t forget: Each week, five lucky pledges will be selected in a drawing to receive $100 in prizes too. Be sure and tell your friends, family, co-workers and all of your email buddies to take the pledge by Friday, June 6th! We can all work together to save water and to benefit our community! What an easy way to do something good for our local environment with just a click of a button!
Here are a few water conservation tips from the The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company website:
•    Nourish your lawn: Feeding your lawn, especially during spring and fall, will strengthen your lawn and save water. Trying to revive undernourished turf with only water is a waste.
•    Mow high: Most people cut their lawn too short. Set your mower to its highest or second-highest setting to encourage deep roots and effective use of moisture already in the soil.
•    Use clippings: Bagging grass clippings wastes time, water and nutrients. Let the clippings stay on your lawn to help it thrive.
•    Keep it clean: Sweep fertilizer and grass clippings back onto your lawn from driveways, sidewalks and curbs. It's good for your grass and it keeps an over abundance of nutrients out of rivers, lakes and streams, which is not good for our waters and the creatures that live in them.
•    Conserve water Your lawn will begin to wilt when water is needed. As much as possible, take advantage of nature's sprinkler and rely on the rain to water your lawn.
