Recreation centers changing hours
Weekly FMWR briefing for Jan. 28-Feb. 3

Hours at Corkan Family Recreation Area facilities will change starting Friday.

The changes affect Stewart Lanes Bowling Center, Corkan Family Fun Center, Cypress Creek Adventure Golf, “The Springs” Water Spray Park and Cypress Sam’s Tree House, which is closed for roof repairs).

The new hours are posted at each facility. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

BOSS speed dating

Try speed dating and make friends at the Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers speed dating meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at Rocky's Zone. Dress is casual. For details, call the BOSS office at 321-8790.

 

Soccer, track and field

Fort Stewart Youth Sports is enrolling track and field (ages 7-14 as of March 1) and soccer (4-13 as of Dec. 31) until Feb. 15. Call Parent Central Services at 767-2312 or stop by Building 442 to join a team. The cost is $30 per child.

Freedom Trail tour

Register by Saturday for Leisure Travel’s Freedom Trail Tour in Savannah at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 9.

See remnants of the Underground Railroad, a market where slaves were bought and sold, and the Savannah African American Monument.

Casino cruise ship

For a day of fun, sail with Leisure Travel aboard the Emerald Princess II casino ship out of Brunswick at 9 a.m. Feb.16. Deadline for signing up is Saturday.

Dive-In Movie

"Ice Age: Continental Drift" will be the Dive-In Movie at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at Tominac Fitness Center’s indoor pool. See Manny, Diego, and Sid on another adventure after their continent is set adrift.

Mardi Gras bash

Enjoy a taste of New Orleans Mardi Gras from 8 p.m. until midnight Feb. 8 at Thunder Run.

There  will be heavy hors d’oeuvres and live zydeco and cajun music, plus various casino games. Cost is $25 per person or $40 per couple in advance; $30 per person, $50 per couple at the door.

Mardi Gras Brunch

The Fat Tuesday celebration returns to Club Stewart on Feb. 10 with a Mardi Gras Brunch. Doors open at 10:15 a.m. Service is from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. 

Cost in advance is $14.95 per adult and $6.45 per child. Tickets at the door are $17.95 per adult and $7.45 per child. Children 4 and younger eat free.

Universal Studios trip

Register by Feb. 8 for the Feb. 15-18 BOSS Universal Studios Trip to Orlando. Sign up at Leisure Travel Office, 767-2841.

The cost is $140 per active duty soldier for three-day admission to the park and four nights in a hotel. Non-active duty pay extra. Families of three or more get special pricing.

Valentine’s dinner

Paula Deen tour

Register by Feb. 15 for a Paula Deen tour in Savannah. Hear her rags-to-riches story on this Leisure Travel trip March 2 at 3:30 p.m.

50 Bird Skeet and Trap Shoot

Register by Feb. 21 at Fort Stewart Pass and Permit for a 50 Bird Skeet and Trap Shoot at 9 a.m. Feb. 23 at the Stewart Skeet and Trap Range. Military ID cardholders are invited.

There are four divisions: expert, novice, youth and ladies, and open trap (not handicapped).

The cost is $25 per person (50 birds skeet or trap) or $40 (100 birds skeet/trap). Fees include lunch and door prizes. Cash awards will be based on entries in each category. A minimum of four shooters per category is required.

Cardboard Boat Regatta

Put your ingenuity to work building a cardboard boat that will sail the length of the Tominac Fitness Center indoor pool and you might just win a prize.

The Cardboard Boat Regatta starts at 10 a.m. Feb. 23. Boat builders are encouraged to register free by Feb. 22, although registration will be accepted up to the race.

Active duty, family and other authorized facility users are welcome.

Trophies will be awarded for the best looking boat, team with best time and the Titanic award,  for the boat that sinks the fastest.

The idea is to use only cardboard and duct tape to build a boat that will make it the length of the pool with a two-person crew.

Categories are children (16 and older), family (one adult and one child, 16 and younger) and open (crew members older than 16).
