Maj. Gen. Frank Cochran commanded the 24th Infantry Division and Fort Stewart, soon after the division was moved here in the 1970s.

Frank Cochran Drive runs between U.S. 84 in Hinesville and Gulick Avenue in the heart of Stewart’s garrison area, crossing E.G. Miles Parkway and Fort Stewart’s Gate 8.

Beginning Thursday, however, Frank Cochran Drive will be no more, at least as it goes through Hinesville. A ceremony to mark its name change to Veterans Parkway will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in a vacant lot near its intersection with E.G. Miles Parkway. The ceremony is open to the public.

The ceremony was initially set for May 1, but the signs were not yet available from the Georgia Department of Transportation, explained Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas.

The street’s name will remain Frank Cochran on the installation at least for now, said Col. Kevin Milton, U.S. Army garrison commander for Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield.

During a recent state of the garrison address to the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce, Milton said he expected the name to also be changed on post later.

Councilman David Anderson said the name change is intended to recognize the service of all veterans.

Maj. Gen. James “Frank” Cochran served as commander of the 24th Infantry Division at Fort Stewart from 1979-1981. Cochran was an Airborne Ranger infantryman.

After retiring from the Army, Cochran, a Florida native, had a career in industry. He died Feb. 22, 2010, in Columbus.
