The soldier killed in a Friday motorcycle accident just outside Fort Stewart has been identified.

Sgt. Alvin E. Phillips, 42, of Sugarland, Texas, died of injuries he received when his motorcycle ran into some trees outside Fort Stewart’s Veterans Parkway gate at 5 p.m. He was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:41.

According to Fort Stewart's Public Affairs Office, Phillips was a heavy equipment transport driver with 3rd Sustainment Brigade. He joined the Army in March 2005 and had one deployment.

PAO said Fort Stewart officials' thoughts and prayers are with the sergeant's family. Grief counseling and chaplain assistance has been offered to them and his friends.

The accident is still under investigation. Investigators said Phillips was wearing protective equipment and had a valid motorcycle license.
