Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
FEMA’s mission is “to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.” The agency works in partnership with other organizations that are part of the nation’s emergency management system, including state and local emergency management agencies, and the American Red Cross.
For tips on helping your family prepare for a disaster, visit ready.gov. This site will help you make a kit, get a plan, and be informed. There is special guidance for military families, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and pet owners to help you better prepare for your special needs. There’s even a special section to help you talk about disasters and being prepared with your children. After a disaster, visit fema.gov to find out if there is a presidential disaster declaration for your state and county. At fema.gov you can also find out about how to apply for
