Obama is first black president
Placeholder Image
Editor, In a letter to you, Lloyd Eldridge claims that Barack Obama is bi-racial and should not be considered America’s first black president.
While Eldridge may be correct in a biological sense, he misses the historical context of racial classification.  Since the time of slavery, America has followed the “one drop rule,” which institutionalized the concept that a person that has any trace of African ancestry is considered black.
In this sense, we can proudly proclaim Barack Obama as our first black president.
