softball leagues

 

The Liberty County Recreation Department is accepting team entries for 2009 adult softball programs. Divisions for both men and women teams are open, church, co-ed (church and open), industrial and 40 and over. For additional information, call the LCRD Office at 876-5359.

 

Golf tournament to benefit
children’s home

 

There will be a golf tournament to benefit the Baxley campus of the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Blueberry Plantation, 315 Ironwood Circle, Alma. The entry fee is $50 per person. For more information, go to www.blueberryplantation.com or call (912) 367-6691.

 

AAU boys national qualifer April 17-19

 

 

The AAU boys tournament national qualifier is April 17-19 in Jacksonville. Boys ages 10 through high school seniors are eligible.

There is a $300 entry fee. Multiple team discounts are available. Registration closes April 3. Participating teams will get an automatic bid to the national tournament.

Lady Hornets tryouts

 

Hinesville is now home to the C-Port Lady Hornets women’s basketball team. The C-Port Hornets is one of the newest members of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League.

The WBCBL provides competitive basketball for women age 20 and older. The competition level ranges from former college players to former NWBL and WNBA players and current international players.

The C-Port Lady Hornets are currently seeking players and staff for the 2009 season. Team tryouts will be April 18 at 10:30 am at Liberty County YMCA, 201 Mary Lou Drive, Hinesville.

CYS baseball, T-ball

 

Registration for youth baseball and T-ball on Fort Stewart will run through May 8, or until slots are no longer available.

Baseball is open to current CYS members age 7-14 (as of Aug. 1), boys and girls and T-ball is open to current CYS members age 4-6 (as of May 1) boys and girls.

Tentative age divisions for baseball will be 7-8 pitching machine, 9-10 pitching machine, and 11-14 live pitch. Register at CYS, Bldg. 443, Gulick Ave. (next to Corkan Pool). Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer to coach, visit CYS or Jordan Youth Gym (Bldg. 608 W. 6th St.) and ask for an application. All new applicants must submit to screening and background checks.

LCRD officials sought

 

The Liberty County Recreation Department is accepting applications for officials and scorekeepers for T-ball, softball and baseball programs. All programs start in April and continue into June. Applications may be obtained at the LCRD office, Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Call 876-5359 for information.

 

 

Scholarship golf touney
set for April 18

 

The Liberty County MLK Observance Association will sponsor the 5th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday, April 18, at the Ricefields Golf Course on Hampton Island.

Each year, the association awards several scholarships in honor of Dr. M.L. King. More than $25,000 in scholarships have been awarded since 2000. Graduating seniors from Bradwell Institute and Liberty County High School are eligible.

The association is a nonprofit organization that receives its funds from local churches, businesses, private donors and proceeds from the annual golf tournament.

The registration deadline is April 4. Individual price is $75 and teams are $300. Hole sponsorships are $150 and corporate sponsorships range from $500-$1,000.

LCHS Panthers to host
large track meet

The Panthers will host a track meet at 4 p.m. April 9. Six schools will compete. LCHS is encouraging the community to come out and support the Panthers team as they battle Richmond Hill, First Presbyterian, Appling, Effingham, South Effingham and Wayne counties.

 

Location changed for Ogeechee paddle

With the recent rainfall, the Ogeechee-Canoochee FamilyPaddle this Saturday has a new launch site and route. Paddlers will put in at George L. Smith State Park in Twin City and paddle up to the Highway 80 bridge and back.

If you have not paddled this tributary to the Canoochee River, it is a must. The lake winds among cypress trees and the wildlife is abundant. The trip will last about 4 hours and paddlers are asked to pack their own lunch.

Energy Oasis to host Energy 5K event

 

Energy Oasis will be host the 3rd Annual Energy 5K to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 25, beginning at Energy Oasis Health Club and Day Spa, 111 Market St., Richmond Hill. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each age group, top 3 overall and top 3 masters. The award celebration will begin after the race. An after-party and silent auction will follow the ceremony.

YMCA martial arts
and tae kwon do

The YMCA is offering tae kwon do and martial arts on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Classes start May 4 and registrations are currently being accepted. The age groups are: tiger cubs (ages 3-4), juniors (ages7-12), teen/adult (ages 13 and up) and women’s self-defense (ages 13 and up).
