Hinesville ’Canes team meeting

 

The Hinesville Hurricanes are gearing up for their 2010 summer season and are meeting with prospective players from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Western Sizzlin’ in Hinesville. At the meeting, attendees will discuss players, schedules and an overall look at the upcoming season. All potential players are encouraged to attend. NAACP hosts 5K run/walk

The Liberty County NAACP will have its third annual Freedom Fun Run/Walk at 7 a.m. Saturday, March 6, in downtown Hinesville.

The route starts at the corner of Main and Midway streets, runs to Memorial Drive then onto Bradwell Street and doubles back around to the starting point. Advance sign-up is recommended and registration starts at 7 a.m. The 5K begins at 8 a.m. The advance entry fee for participants ages 10-20 is $5, adults ages 21-55 are $10, seniors ages 56 and older are free. Race day entry fees are $15 for everyone, except seniors. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place in each age group. To sign up, call Dwight Newbould at 570-6615

The Liberty County YMCA will host a March Madness basketball tournament at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 27. Teams have until March 22 to register. It’s open to ages 16 and older, and the fee is $150 per team. For more information, call 368-9622.

• 10 a.m.: Free football and cheer camps

• 2 p.m.: Free basketball, golf and dance camps

• 6 p.m.: Student 3-point shooting contest.

• 7 p.m.: NFL vs. area teachers/coaches basketball game

16U Rebels: 2-5 p.m. March 6, at Bradwell Institute

17U Rebels: 5-7 p.m. March 14, at St. James Sports Center.

The Dolphin Project to hold training

 

The Dolphin Project will have a two-hour training session at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, University Hall, room 157. Potential volunteers will learn to conduct wild dolphin research in Georgia and lower South Carolina waters.

The Dolphin Project needs volunteers, captains and their boats, photographers and team leaders to record data on dolphins living on the coast. TDP, an all-volunteer, nonprofit research and education organization, was created more than 20 years ago.

No reservations are required to attend the free training. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Lady Rebels’ teams
now forming

 

 

The St. James Coastal Crew Rebels are holding tryouts for their new Lady Rebels teams. The 17U girls will be coached by Mike Brown and the 15U will be coached by Rosby Frasier. The girls will be assisted by coach Stephanie Clay.

Bradwell Institute is building a wall of fame featuring former BI Tiger athletes who played sports on the college level. Tiger coach Jeff Miller and his assistants have a partial list of athletes, but they’d like even more. Names and photos are being gathered. To submit a name or photo the following criteria must be met:

The former athlete must have graduated from Bradwell Institute. The student athlete must have gone on to play sports at the college level and must have graduated from college.

The 25th Annual Hunting Heritage Banquet will be sponsored by the Coastal Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation on March 11 at The Clubhouse in Rye Patch.

The Liberty County YMCA has an after-school program for middle school children. The program offers a safe place for teenagers and includes daily devotions, snacks and homework help. Participants take field trips, explore career opportunities, do arts and crafts and play in sports tournaments. AAU girls’ tournament in Jacksonville
